A deck is a floor that lives outside, and on this coast that is a demanding job. We build new cedar and composite decks, and we repair the ones the rain has got into, replacing rotted boards, resetting loose railings, and re-fastening structure that has started to move.
Vancouver Island decks fail from the bottom up, not the top down. Surface boards that look tired are usually the least of it. We check the ledger connection, the joist tops and the post bases first, because those are what actually make a deck unsafe.

How much does a new deck cost on Vancouver Island?
Material choice and height are the two big drivers. Pressure-treated framing with cedar decking is the economical route; composite decking with aluminium or glass railing sits well above it. Height matters more than most people expect, anything above roughly two feet needs guards and often engineered footings, which changes the scope substantially. We inspect and quote before any work starts.
Is my deck worth repairing or does it need replacing?
If the framing and posts are sound and only the surface boards are tired, repair is far cheaper and completely worthwhile. If the ledger where the deck attaches to the house has water damage, or post bases are soft, that is a safety issue and usually a rebuild. We check those specific points first and tell you which one you have before quoting anything.
Cedar or composite for a coastal deck?
Cedar looks better and costs less up front, but on this coast it wants cleaning and re-staining every two to three years to stay that way. Composite costs more initially and never looks quite like wood, but it will not rot, and salt air and constant damp do not bother it. If you enjoy the maintenance, cedar. If you do not, composite will make you happier by year five.
